Finished some books! Summer deck reading time is so good.

The Ionian Mission by Patrick O'Brian. Book 8 of the Aubrey-Maturin series. Not destined to be one of my favorites of the series but still extremely well-written.

The Half Life of Valery K by Natasha Pulley. This is an unfolding mystery about a scientist-prisoner sent to an irradiated town in Russia during the Cold War and it's kind of like a horror novel told in a very factual and casual way and I love that. Great characters, pacing, and writing.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. Twisted but warm fairy tale.

I watched all three seasons of The Great about Catherine the Great of Russia (highly dramatized) and it was fantastically funny and fucked up. Gorgeous costuming. By season 3, I did think it was getting a little repetitive although then they wrenched something which made it more interesting but ultimately I didn't love.

Also watched The Artful Dodger. I never read Oliver Twist so I feel like I missed some background but still fun.

The first season of X-Men '97 just finished today!! There was a post-credits scene that I almost missed. I wish shows would stop doing that. Anyway spoilers )

Lastly, I did in fact complete a vid in time for [community profile] vidukon_cardiff! It's killing me to not be able to post it but I'm excited for it to be in the Premieres show and I'm really stoked for the whole con.

In reading news, I am continuing to clip through the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian quicker than expected! I've finished books 2, 3 & 4: Post Captain, HMS Surprise, and The Mauritius Command. Now that I've gotten into them, I don't find the old-fashioned language as difficult to wade through and I may actually understand 1 in 10 of the sailing terms. Also, I am 1000% more interested since they've revealed themselves to be almost as much spy novels as naval adventure novels. I love the spy stuff. Also also the copies my library owns are lovely paperbacks that are the optimal size and texture I want for reading and the weather has been nice so I can read outside and all this combines to quality reading time. I'm now halfway though book 5 Desolation Island and it continues to be a superb series.

I haven't made a vid in awhile but I have ideas and tech update plans and in the meantime I am bidding on a vid to potentially be made for me in the [community profile] womansplace auction which is raising funds for the National Network of Abortion Funds. Everyone should go check out the offers!

In TV, I watched We Are Lady Parts which was fun and adorable and now I'm mostly re-watching Parks and Rec episodes while I wait in anticipation for new shows. (Oh and also there is a new season of What We Do in the Shadows that's about 3 episodes in!) I'm going to make myself a release schedule cheat sheet since I keep forgetting and looking these up:
  • Good Omens season 2: July 28th (Amazon Prime)
  • Heartstopper season 2: August 3 (Netflix)
  • Only Murders in the Building season 3: August 8th (Hulu)
  • Ahsoka: August 23rd (Disney)
  • Wheel of Time season 2: September 1 (Amazon Prime)
  • Loki season 2: October 6 (Disney)

Released stuff I intend to watch at some point when I have time/various platform access: Silo and Severence on Apple, The Great on Hulu, 1899 and The Witcher on Netflix, The Terror wherever that is, Interview with the Vampire, and the new Star Trek shows.

Life has been busy and I keep forgetting to post things. This vid was for [community profile] romancingmcshep in February and had companion fic written by [personal profile] danceswithgary! Also claiming it for my [community profile] vid_bingo card guardian square. I think I got bingo a while back but I didn't keep good track and I'm pleased to say I underestimated my potential vidding output by just getting a 3x3 grid. I should go get a round 2.

This vid is just an enormous compilation of the way John and Rodney look at each other in joy and confusion. I probably could have done entirely sitting next to each other clips but there were too many other good options to pass up. I'm kind of weirdly most proud of the fact that I completely eviscerated this song into 6 parts--to shorten it up because I couldn't face 4 minutes--and I think it's completely unnoticeable except for the fade in and out. Also on AO3.

In other vidding news, [community profile] vidukon_cardiff is open for registration! I really enjoyed it last year. It's sadly a weekend I have plans but it's virtual and I think there's a way to replay and watch as if you're real time.

[community profile] vidukon_cardiff has been amazing so far you guys. So many great vids! This also made me make the leap to trying out Discord although I'm still figuring it out. I had two vids in the Premieres show today and people said really nice things!

Vid 1 is a fan trailer I made for Naomi Novik's Temeraire book series. DRAGONS!

Vid 2 is a Lord of the Rings vid focusing on all the gorgeous nature shots.

[community profile] equinox_exchange vids are released! I love the costume party theme. Media about different eras is my jam. I've watched a few from fandoms I know and they are fab.

Quick rec: The Bullpen - Elizabeth Swann being extremely badass in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Wow. I really like the quick clips. I can only dream of ever being able to edit like this.

I did manage to finish my treat and I hope the recipient likes it! On to my next vid project!

Last weekend I finished clipping about 200 scenes for the [community profile] equinox_exchange treat I'm working on and this week I finished the first draft! It may be the ONLY draft because iMovie is insane and doesn't let you save versions of things, but most likely I'll constantly mess with it until the deadline. I do need to reclip at least one scene and there's a couple things that don't quite fit and scenes I really wanted to put in somewhere so we shall see. Vidding is hard! My struggles include: cut for my complaining )

Anyway, this probably sounds like I don't like vidding but I actually really like it! It suits my pedantic soul. I have three more ideas for next ones. Not that I'll give up writing in favor of it though. I also have a WIP coming along pretty well which is always nice :)

I made a vid! For [community profile] crossovercoffee. Two of this round's prompts were Parker from Leverage (character) and using the ventilation system to get around (trope). Using the vents to get around is of course a thing that Parker does all the time so there were some good clips. These are from 1x08 The Bank Job (technically a money deposit drop and not a vent but close enough), 2x07 The Two Live Crew Job, 3x03 The Inside Job & 3x11 The Rashomon Job. There are probably more instances but I couldn't think of them offhand and I currently only own the first 3 seasons.

I was able to use VLC to get clips off my DVDs and I feel very powerful! There may be more ambitious future vids! This was also 100% easier once I realized the version of iMovie I had was somehow from 2009 and I downloaded a newer version that is much more user friendly.

Anyway, this was fun! Many thanks to [personal profile] colls for vidding knowledge and encouragement :)

This year one of my goals is learning to vid and I'm excited! [personal profile] colls has given me some quality vidding advice and guidance and here is my awesome [community profile] vid_bingo card.

BAMF guardian friendship
happiness FREE SPACE sadness
character study multifandom recruitment

I have some ideas that are probably way too ambitious to start with so I'm going to try like 20 seconds in both iMovie and Adobe Premiere and see if I can figure out how they work and which I like. The latest song I've had on repeat is Save This City by Zayde Wolf which I feel really lends itself to Batman/Gotham (step into the darkness/if you're gonna save this city) but I don't care enough about Gotham and I don't think I have Batman Begins on streaming so maybe I'll try Daredevil. Matt Murdock certainly fits it too.
