Finished some books! Summer deck reading time is so good.

The Ionian Mission by Patrick O'Brian. Book 8 of the Aubrey-Maturin series. Not destined to be one of my favorites of the series but still extremely well-written.

The Half Life of Valery K by Natasha Pulley. This is an unfolding mystery about a scientist-prisoner sent to an irradiated town in Russia during the Cold War and it's kind of like a horror novel told in a very factual and casual way and I love that. Great characters, pacing, and writing.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. Twisted but warm fairy tale.

I watched all three seasons of The Great about Catherine the Great of Russia (highly dramatized) and it was fantastically funny and fucked up. Gorgeous costuming. By season 3, I did think it was getting a little repetitive although then they wrenched something which made it more interesting but ultimately I didn't love.

Also watched The Artful Dodger. I never read Oliver Twist so I feel like I missed some background but still fun.

The first season of X-Men '97 just finished today!! There was a post-credits scene that I almost missed. I wish shows would stop doing that. Anyway spoilers )

Lastly, I did in fact complete a vid in time for [community profile] vidukon_cardiff! It's killing me to not be able to post it but I'm excited for it to be in the Premieres show and I'm really stoked for the whole con.

Usually I post when I've finished some books but I've stalled out on my reading lately. Now that the weather is getting nice though, I plan to get in some quality reading time on my deck to catch up.

I finished watching BBC Ghosts (seasons 4 & 5). Kudos to my library for somehow acquiring these. I had been checking streaming and Amazon and such without luck.

I also watched seasons 1 & 2 of Warrior Nun on Netflix and I wouldn't describe it as a good show honestly but parts of it are fun and they do absolutely hilarious things with the Catholic aesthetic. Like, as a lapsed Catholic, I feel I should drop some money in the collection plate for how much I enjoyed the light up crown of thorns and the exploding rosary beads and the way the papacy is soundtracked. If you want to watch nuns be badass, this is the show. Apparently it's technically cancelled, but they're doing a trio of follow up movies. At that point, I'm like, why not just do a shortened 6 episode season? What is the difference? Anyway, I'll watch it.

My true obsession this month has been X-Men. Disney released X-Men '97 which is basically a continuation of the '90s animated show that was half my personality as a child. It is so insane and it is so faithful to what I remember and I am loving it. Also, April was Cherik Revival fest on tumblr so I decided to re-watch X-Men: First Class which I was absolutely obsessed with back 2011 and which I still love with my whole heart. However, re-watching the entire 4 movie set was a mistake since unfortunately I have never hated movies as much as I hate Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix and I had allowed myself to forget that. I also re-watched the original 2000 trilogy (Ian McKellan <3) and I don't think Last Stand was that bad anymore but that's possibly because I had just watched Dark Phoenix so by comparison it was fine. spoilers ) I just posted an XMFC AU fic and I'm going to make a vid for the first time in forever. I can start a vid and be done with it by next week for [community profile] vidukon_cardiff premieres, right??
