another story must begin
Dec. 20th, 2018 06:21 pmSo I've finished reading a ton of Les Mis fics on AO3 and finally felt like I was ready to make headway writing my own (I am, a little) but then I said to myself, 'hey, maybe you want to read the actual book too'? And then I discovered that it was free for download on Project Gutenberg.
(Does everyone know about Project Gutenberg? Because it's amazing. Tons of free ebooks that are now in the public domain in the US. Lots of classics: Pride and Prejudice, Frankenstein, Moby Dick, War and Peace, The Count of Monte Cristo. I did a sort by popularity and this is going to supplement my reading list for a very long time.)
I'm on chapter 10 and so far it has been all about Bishop Myriel, who is amazing, and I'm awaiting the introduction of the characters who I consider more the main set. From the table of contents, this is clearly an extremely long novel but I vaguely knew that and also some of the chapter names are hilarious. Like these are almost The Onion headlines to me and I can't wait to get to them:
FIVE-FRANC PIECE FALLS ON THE GROUND AND PRODUCES A TUMULT
IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BE DRUNK IN ORDER TO BE IMMORTAL
THE UTILITY OF GOING TO MASS, IN ORDER TO BECOME A REVOLUTIONIST
DEPOSIT YOUR MONEY IN A FOREST RATHER THAN WITH A NOTARY (Did Ron Swanson write this?)
Also I feel like I understand some characterizations of Marius better now that I've seen these ones: MARIUS, WHILE SEEKING A GIRL IN A BONNET, ENCOUNTERS A MAN IN A CAP and MARIUS BECOMES PRACTICAL ONCE MORE TO THE EXTENT OF GIVING COSETTE HIS ADDRESS and MARIUS PRODUCES ON SOME ONE WHO IS A JUDGE OF THE MATTER, THE EFFECT OF BEING DEAD.
