Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers. Book 1 of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries series. I've been considering reading these for awhile and this was solid but I feel maybe over-hyped. It took me until the last quarter to really get into it. That said, the detail of Lord Peter having shell-shock from WWI added a lot and the conclusion was good. I may read some more but not immediately.

In TV, I finished:

Slow Horses (season 5). Always enjoy my dumbass incompetent spies--except River is on thin ice to me in the final episode regarding his insane lack of self-awareness. Not perhaps my favorite season but I think that will remain season 4 because the focus on River and his grandfather appealed to me.

Great British Baking Show (season 13). Nice bakers making nice things <3

In other news, I am signed up for rec_cember so prepare for some vid and fic recs from me in December!

Aww, Lord Peter! Definitely some range over the course of the series, as Sayers wrote them over a broad span of time; mine and many people's favorites are the ones with Harriet Vane (Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night, Busman's Honeymoon). I also adore Murder Must Advertise.
ETA: my sister wanted me to say Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club has more content involving shell shock/WWI veterans.

It was good, I just had really high expectations! So much of my mystery enjoyment also depends on how I feel about the detective, like Agatha Christie I adore all the Miss Marple but I'm eh about Poirot, and I am not yet convinced to love Lord Peter. He's like if Bertie Wooster was smart and somehow that puts me off lol.

Oh nice, maybe I'll skip to some of these if skipping around isn't confusing.

Lol there is actually an excellent Wooster/Whimsey crossover if you're interested! There's certainly some similiarities in Peter's mask.

Yeah, I would say definitely do NOT read the Harriet ones out of order because their relationship develops in important ways in each, but the others are pretty standalone. You might get some mild spoilery refs if you skip around, but the pleasure of a mystery is imo in the process anyway.

River's on very thin ice with me as well! The writers seem to be deliberately making him unsympathetic, possibly so he has to stay at Slough House. But he's not being written as the kind of fuck up I like.

He did one (1) thing right after another entire series of fuck ups and he thinks he's great again! He must be stopped. Now Shirley and Coe otoh were properly fun fuck ups this season.
