Finished books and such.

I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys. YA historical fiction of the fall of communism in Romania in the 80s. Short chapters and it read quickly as a tense, justifiably paranoid character perspective.

The Surgeon's Mate by Patrick O'Brian. Finally I continue my read through the Aubrey-Maturin series! This was book 7 and as usual Patrick O'Brian does not miss. More spy and navy adventures, shipwrecks, capture, and romance. The title for this amuses me because there is actually a role on the ship of surgeon's mate but I don't think it's mentioned at all in this particular book so clearly this is a pun on the fact that a lot of focus is on Stephen and Diana's relationship.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I like to pick up random classics I've never read at used book sales and I've had this on my shelf for a while. I enjoyed it for the poetical writing and unflinching POV.

Probability Moon by Nancy Kress. Sci-fi where an expedition goes to a planet where the populace "share reality". This has both a military plot and a cultural anthropology plot that intertwine and it feels very Stargate. Humanity travels through space via space tunnels (the back cover actually says star gates but the book never calls them that) created by an ancient, disappeared race. Favorite quote: "Achieving entanglement for an object the size of a warship--let alone controlling the phenomenon--violated so many cherished principles that the feuding in physics journals resembled gang warfare."

In TV, I haven't really been watching much which is probably part of why I read these four books in two weeks. I am kind of lackadaisically watching UK football (soccer) documentary series Sunderland 'Til I Die, mainly for Ted Lasso fic writing research, but it's depressing and the way the crowds yell at the players is really intense in a bad way so I think I'm done with it. (I did a Ted Lasso fic rec list btw if anyone else is in the fandom and needs some good reads!) Now I need a documentary on salt mines for Foundation fic writing purposes.
