Challenge #2 - Talk about your fannish history
My first fandom in the sense of 'I was obsessed with it as a child' (and I still love it today) was X-Men. I loved the cartoon, I had action figures and cards, I dressed up for Halloween as my girl Rogue. And X-Men is a very enduring fandom with reboots. The 2000 film was amazing and everyone was perfectly cast: Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, James Marsden, I could go on. X-Men: First Class, a decade later, I also adored and was super into. Possibly one of the only large fandoms I actually managed to be in during its heyday and not sliding in five years late as is my usual MO.
I discovered fanfic in my freshman English class in the computer lab when I was doing our actual writing assignment and my friend was on a website with a link out to FFN. Later, I took a look at FFN myself and the rest is history. Like many other people, I think Harry Potter was my fic gateway. I remember I was obsessed with this one series on FFN and the first fanfic I ever wrote was actually a related work, and I just randomly emailed this poor author a story that I wrote in their universe. But they were so kind to me. They even posted it with their series. The kindness of fandom.
Eventually I wrote my own stuff on my own FFN account and then I basically followed the fandom platform trends as much as I could through LJ and DW and AO3 and tumblr. I've been sucked into a ton of popular fandoms but usually not at the height of their popularity. I just kind of chill and throw stuff out into the void whenever I have some inspiration or I'm participating in a challenge!
