2023 Reading So Far
May. 18th, 2023 08:07 pmI'm averaging about 1 book a month which is perhaps not great, but I'm good with it.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. This was a wild ride and the writing was fantastic. Extremely minor plot point but my favorite part was how the the college had kind of a drug culture and when they got busted the punishment was to participate in like an anti-drug Jeopardy thing and these students were pharmacologist level good at it lol.
Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. A little bit of a difficult read at first because of the older language and extremely detailed sea and ship terminology which I will never fully understand, but very rewarding. (These books were published in like 1970s forward but I would have absolutely believed they were contemporary to Jane Austen. That's exactly how they're written except that they are of course about sea voyages and adventures.) I'm reading the next one in the series now and this is a 21 book series so at my current rate, if I complete it, it will take me approximately 2 years.
His Majesty's Dragon & Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik. Re-reads because I love them very much. These are the first two books in the Temeraire series and they're my favorites so I probably will stop here for now. I think I read these were actually influenced by the Aubrey-Maturin series above and I can absolutely see it. Bonus that the ships are dragons. (I broke the binding on my trade paperback of His Majesty's Dragon so I'll have to see if I can fix it.)
Also, I'm watching The Power TV adaptation of the book which I read last year. I think it's very faithful and I particularly enjoy Tatiana Moskalev being unhinged. It's on Amazon Prime if anyone is interested. Amazon is somehow very bad at marketing their TV stuff in my opinion.
