More summer deck reading.
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. Perfectly nice and well-written, I think I just prefer for there to be some more conflict in the books I'm reading.
Watership Down by Richard Adams. The Odyssey but make it rabbits. Now this had some conflict. At first I was like, this is about traveling four (4) miles? There is an entire chapter about crossing a river?? But then we got some insane stakes. I like it more and more as I'm letting it marinate in my brain post-read. Also, I love that the most hilarious line in the whole thing would be absolutely unintelligible to anyone that hasn't read it and learned the Lapine words. And it's mainly funny because it's said in the Lapine words.
So after I read the book, I decided to watch the 2018 Netflix adaptation and I don't think it's a terrible adaptation necessarily but having just read the book, there were a lot of things that irritated me, namely,
Okay, let me say a couple good things though!
Otherwise, I have been watching random '90s movies that I think would be considered classics but I've never seen. I watched The Bodyguard (partly because I was writing a Shadowhunters Bodyguard AU, although the movie dynamic is not where I ended up going), Point Break, and Gross Pointe Blank and it's really interesting to consider how different these feel from current movies. And speaking of current movies, I went to see The Fall Guy and I thought it was very cute and fun. Apparently it got a lot of bad reviews but personally I had a great time and if you want to see a rom com about stunts and making movies, I think you could do a lot worse. I need to look up what other summer movies are coming out. Anyone have recs?

- Constant and pointless switching of the characters for different events.
- Weird, unnecessary focus on romance.
- More actively adversarial relationships all around but particularly for Bigwig. (They took the Bigwig-Kehaar friendship from me and I'll never forgive that.)
- Genderswapping Strawberry completely changed the character (just create a new OFC if you want to go this route?) and actively undermined one of the main things that shows Hazel's forward-thinking and leadership which is that they need does.
- Unnecessary death for shock. Holly is fine!!
- Also the rabbit designs were way too similar. Like, yes, attempt at realism. But also I cannot tell half of them apart.
Okay, let me say a couple good things though!
- I liked the filmstrip device they used for General Woundwort's backstory.
- And one character-action switch that did work for me was Fiver getting trapped at the farm and Hazel being the final sprinter to lead the dog back.

Date: 2024-05-29 12:11 pm (UTC)If Love Lies Bleeding is showing near you, I'd highly recommend it. A seedy sapphic romance sprinkled with magic realism. My favorite movie so far this year.
Late Night With The Devil looks delightfully bonkers, so I'm planning to catch that at the cinemas. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is on a wait and see, but if the reviews are fairly positive I'll want to catch that for the nostalgia.
I think it's time for me to re-watch Empire Records. Popped into my head the other day.
